WHAT IS A CHURCHWARDEN?
A Churchwarden is a Parishioner elected as a director or administrator of a civil and religious Corporation that owns materials goods for the purpose of facilitating the practice of the Roman Catholic religion.
First and foremost, the Churchwarden must have sense of “church”, possess a basic knowledge of administration and practical common sense. They work in collaboration with the Parish Administrator/Pastor who is the chairperson of the Fabrique*.
(*Fabrique is a special kind of corporation who is the owner of all properties for the use of the parishioners.)
WHAT A CHURCHWARDEN IS NOT?
A Churchwarden is neither a member of the Parish Council, nor a Director of recreational activities, nor an Insurance Agent.
The Churchwarden’s main concern is not the organization of pastoral ministry in the Parish. A Churchwarden is not an organizer of recreational activities for young people of the parish, and neither tends to the material and spiritual needs of the poor.
A Churchwarden is a Director of a civil corporation which has the Roman Catholic Religion as its sole objective.
What does a churchwarden do and is required to do?
The churchwarden is an Administrator of the material goods and property intended for the religious benefit of the parishioners. He/she offers his/her time and talent to further the mission statement of the parish, as indicated in our parish bulletin. He/she will serve for a term of 3 years.
Who is eligible to be a warden?
1. a person must be over 18 years old
2. active and have a good reputation as a catholic
3. he/she must be living within the civil boundaries of the parish
4. must have a sense of the ‘church’
5. possess basic administration skills
